Garven To Become Golden Gopher

On September 8, 2014, Danielle Garven, (6’1”, W, Pope John Paul II, ‘A’ Game, 2015) gave a verbal commitment to attend the University of Minnesota, next Fall.

Garven was very excited about the decision she just made.

“I’m super happy!” she said about becoming a Golden Gopher.

After stepping foot on campus, during her visit during the Labor Day long weekend, Garven had an inkling that she had found the place where she will be calling her home away from home.

“As soon as I got there, and got to meet the rest of the coaching staff and the players, I just felt right at home. And they really welcomed me. They were all really nice and genuine.”

On the court, Garven is very comfortable in knocking down shots from behind the arc and has proven that she can contrast that skill with being able to shoot off the dribble as well. Her confidence in being able to make open shots, has added to her consistency that has shown steady improvement over the past couple of years. Add those skills to a feisty competitor that will not back down when felt she has been wronged, and Minnesota fans can get a sense of the type of player they’ll be getting.

Whether she is called upon to use her skills at the 3 or even a bit at the 4 spot while wearing the Golden Gopher’s Maroon and Gold, Garven can’t wait to roll up her sleeves and make an impact in a very competitive Big Ten Conference.

“They are in the Number 1 conference,” said Garven boldly, “and they will be playing against the best!”

Garven was able to turn heads one last time this summer, playing with ‘A’ Game at Nike Chicago and USJN Washington. And before that, her second stint with the Canadian National Cadette U17 Women’s that played at the FIBA World Championships which this year took place in the Czech Republic.

“It was a good experience being able to travel to Europe and seeing different styles of play and needing to adapt to it and learning from my coaches as well.”

It was those coaches, like the ones from the Advantage Titans where she spent her last 3 rep years, as well as a whole bunch others, that the appreciative Garven wanted to take some time out to give thanks. She wanted to show some appreciation to them, and their help on her journey to this point.

“My coaches…all the coaches that I’ve have up until now, for helping me and developing me and as well, my teammates, ” said Garven.

And of course, she couldn’t forget her family who have been supporting her, and pushing her to new limits.

“I would like to thank my family for all of their support…especially my brother Craig. And…my father for playing a big role!”

Having also considered West Virginia and East Carolina on her short list, the stress has diminished considerably.

For now, she has her eyes set on one last goal: Winning OFSSA (Ontario High School Championships) Gold. It’s a journey that gets started in the next couple of weeks and will be a great way to end off her high school career.
